The Parish Council fully support the actions taken by the Speeding Group. Their hard work and dedication since forming in May 2007 has been evident thoughtout many locations in the Village.
During 2009 the group did traffic speed surveys working more than 56 hours from June to October.
As one can imagine it is a difficult to implement during Winter months due to the cold weather.
The results from the speed checks have been shocking and has highlighted the problems we have with thoughtless drivers, with speeds up to 56 MPH ,many from Great Chishill.
Having a working speeding group, we believe, reminds drivers to reduce speed and it gives the perception that Great Chishill is not the place to speed.
The Parish Council wishes to thank those volunteers for their hard work and dedication.
If you are interested in taking part in the Speeding Group please contact  the following:

SPEEDWATCH IN GREAT CHISHILL                       September 2009

Following on from the Parish Plan, a major concern was speeding in the village for the majority of residents.

The Police and Council were approached regarding traffic calming measures and the way forward was to prove that there was an issue.  So a “Speedwatch” team was set up to tackle this issue (see contact in the Village Information Leaflet).
A speed gun was purchased and random checks were carried out in the village by the team.
The police from Melbourn subsequently sent up a police officer on a couple of occasions and each time motorists were booked and fined for committing speeding offences.

Following on from a pilot in East Cambridgeshire, South Cambridgeshire adopted the  "Speedwatch" initiative as a way to collect information on the scale of the problem and give support to Parishes to find a way to educate drivers.

With the full support of the Parish Council, volunteers from Great and Little Chishill were trained by the police and now Speedwatch takes place regularly in the Village.

This entails an electronic board which monitors the speed of cars being erected in the village as well as  signs that state that this initiative in operation.

All volunteers wear fluorescent jackets and it is very clear what is taking place.
If a car is travelling of speeds over 33  miles per hour  the equipment shows the speed of the vehicle, details of the vehicle are noted by the speed watch team,  and this information is passed to  a central coordinator in Cambridge.

Vehicles travelling more than 37 miles per hour (speed limit plus 3 mph plus 10%) are sent a letter from the Sector Inspector.
The Sector Inspector has been instructed that where speeding vehicles are from the Parish, then the PCSO (Police Community Support Officer) will distribute  the  letter to the driver  in person  to reinforce the message and the police support to the scheme.

Where hot spots of speeding are occurring the enforcement Police Officers will follow up with Speed Checks and offenders will be prosecuted.

Please note that  the Speedwatch  initiative means that enforcement police are not being taken off the job of catching criminals etc, but will help where speeding is at high level and direct activities to help combat this very important issue and indeed a  potential killer.

HOW DO SPEEDWATCH REPORT THEIR FINDINGS ?

See the 2009 results below.           Comments to webmaster welcomed.
